Basement Renovations: 4 Ideas for Enhancing Home Value and Increasing Your Living Space

Basements are often overlooked as an unnecessary part of the house that has no value and no use. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Here are four ways you can enhance your home’s value and add to your overall living space.

1. Create a Family Room.

Basements are one of the most popular areas for family social activities.  It is an ideal location for pool tables, big screen televisions, craft supplies, board games and much more. However, you don’t want to be in a grungy old basement, so you should create an inviting space by decorating it as you would the rest of your home. Add some comfortable furniture, incorporate internet connections, install sound systems and add plenty of good lighting. All of this together creates a very functional space.

2. Create a Bedroom with a Bathroom.

Whether it is for guests that come visit or a teenager, you may want to convert your basement into a bedroom and bathroom (full or half). In order to create the most ideal space, you’ll need to determine who is going to stay down there. For example, you’ll likely choose different furnishings if your teen is going to stay in the basement as opposed to visiting family members.

3. Create a Mini Kitchen or Wet Bar.

If you plan on using your basement for entertaining, then a mini kitchen or a wet bar is a must. This makes it much easier to entertain your guests and fits in very well with a family or game room. A mini kitchen is a good idea if you’re creating a guest suite and you plan on possibly having someone stay at your home for an extended period of time.

4. Create a Laundry Room.

If you don’t have space in the rest of your home for a laundry room, your basement may be the perfect answer. This way, when you’re drying clothes, you won’t have to worry about heating up the house. You won’t have to worry about listening to the annoying sound of the washing machine (or dryer, for that matter). However, you’ll need a floor drain and exterior wall access in order to install a vent for the dryer.

All of these are excellent options for basement renovations, but they do each require a bit of professional help. Contact Structure Remodeling for a quote and more advice on your basement renovation.
